Highlights of the Free Cinema Program

The free cinema cycle opens with The Critic (2013), Hernán Guerschuny’s debut feature about a film critic entangled in a romantic narrative he would typically dismiss. The program explores the comedic tension between personal lives and professional roles, as seen in films like El Salvavidas (2011), where Mauricio struggles as a lifeguard, or El Súper (1979), where Roberto grapples with his duties as a building superintendent.

A standout classic, Sitting Pretty (1948) by Walter Lang, challenges traditional gender roles as Lynn Belvedere, a modern nanny, disrupts a community’s expectations. The free cinema series also revisits New York through unique lenses: Amos Kollek’s Fast Food, Fast Women (2000) portrays the city as a magical realm of possibility, while Steve Carell’s Dan in Real Life (2007) offers hope through Juliette Binoche’s radiant performance. In The Good Heart (2009), Icelandic director Dagur Kári blends Nordic melancholy with New York’s neon-lit ambition, creating a distinctive American tale.

The free cinema lineup includes rare gems like Solos (2005), a Peruvian film reflecting on life’s fleeting nature, and The More the Merrier (1943), George Stevens’ wartime comedy that delivers infectious joy. To close each week, the CCCC presents essential titles like Ruggles of Red Gap (1935), where Charles Laughton’s English butler navigates life in America, and El Ciudadano Ilustre (2016), following a Nobel Prize-winning Argentine writer’s return to his hometown.

The cycle concludes with Hit Man (2023), directed by Richard Linklater, who collaborates closely with his actors to craft a narrative that poses a Nietzschean question about living dangerously, inviting audiences to reflect on life’s deeper meanings. This free cinema event at the Centre del Carme promises a month of laughter, reflection, and cinematic discovery under Valencia’s summer skies.
