Valencia’s famed Fallas 2025 festival saw a sharp dip in hospitality profits, as cold rains and an unlucky calendar doused business expectations. Hoteliers and restaurateurs report turnover falling by up to 20% compared to last year’s fiery festivities.
The Hospitality Coordinator of the Barrios de València has reported a notable decline in turnover for local establishments during Fallas 2025 festivities, with estimates ranging between 10% and 20% compared to Fallas 2024.
The downturn has been attributed to a combination of unfavourable weather conditions and the timing of the celebrations, which have impacted both local and tourist participation.
In a detailed statement, the Coordinator highlighted the uneven performance of businesses throughout the week, with some days faring better than others. The highly anticipated La Plantà, which coincided with a Saturday night, saw one of the largest turnouts in recent years.
This day marked the peak of tourist activity in Valencia, with visitors flocking to the city to witness the intricate ninots (Fallas monuments) and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. As a result, Friday and Saturday exceeded initial revenue expectations, offering a glimmer of hope for the hospitality sector.
However, the momentum was short-lived. By Monday, the city experienced a sharp decline in tourist numbers, compounded by cold and rainy weather. This led to a significant drop in activity, particularly on Monday, March 17, and Tuesday, March 18, which included the iconic Nit del Foc (Night of Fire).
On these days, turnover plummeted by approximately 70% compared to previous years. The Coordinator described the situation as “minimal activity,” with only the central hubs of the festivities managing to sustain some level of engagement.
Saint Joseph’s Day, celebrated on March 19, provided a brief respite. A temporary break in the rain allowed families and friends to gather for meals and celebrations, coinciding with both Father’s Day and the feast of Saint Joseph.
This slight improvement helped salvage what would otherwise have been a dismal end to the Fallas 2025 festivities.
Looking ahead, the Hospitality Coordinator emphasised the need for strategic planning to mitigate similar challenges in future editions of Fallas. Factors such as weather resilience, event scheduling, and enhanced promotional efforts will be critical to ensuring the continued success of one of Valencia’s most iconic cultural events.
The weather has, for the first time, become a significant factor in the organization of the festival, and Fallas 2025 became yet another victim of this year’s rains.
