In recognition of the gastronomic importance of the region, the Michelin Stars 2022 award ceremony – ‘foodie Oscars’ – will be held in Valencia. Unlike last year’s event, held remotely in Madrid due to the pandemic, this one will be held in person, albeit with masks. Legendary Valencian chef Quique Dacosta will host.
This is a great coup, with deserved recognition for Valencia and its cuisine. There are 119 restaurants from Valencia on the current Michelin list, with 16 classified as one star, four as two star, and Quique Dacosta’s eponymous restaurant as the sole recipient in the Comunidad Valenciana of the world’s top gastronomic award, three Michelin stars.
That it is no small feat, given that there are only about 200 Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain, and only 11 with three stars. That means that Denia, with its three-star restaurant Quique Dacosta, has put the Comunidad Valenciana on a par with the entire Madrid comunidad, which also has only one restaurant with the highest Michelin Award.
It is also an honour for the 48-year-old Valencian chef, who has five Michelin stars to his name, three for the Quique Dacosta restaurant in Denia and two for the El Poblet restaurant on Calle Correos in Valencia. Since 2012, when he was awarded three Michelin stars for the first time, Quique Dacosta has been hailed as a true leader of avant-garde cuisine in Spain.
If you can’t wait until December to find out who will be joining their gastronomic galácticos in the Michelin hall of fame, and now that restrictions are easing, there has never been a better time to visit and support the battered hostelería sector that has struggled so much during the pandemia, this would be a great time to visit one of these restaurants to vote with your feet – and your wallet.
