New Metro Line In Valencia Finally Commits To Opening

The opening of a new metro line in Valencia, L10, is scheduled for next spring, either in March or April…

It’s official: Valencia will get two new metro lines in the spring of 2022. The Ministry of Territorial Policy, Public Works, and Mobility announced this, and while no specific date has been provided, it is expected that by this time next year, we will be able to take the train to Ciutat de les Arts I les Ciencies and the tram to Natzaret.

The two new lines are L10 and L11. L10 is a rail extension of the existing network that will finally connect Valencia’s most popular tourist attraction, the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciutat de les Arts I les Ciències), with the city centre. But, more importantly, this route will connect the barrios Ruzafa (stop at Avenida Regne de Valencia), Monteolivete and Quatre Carreres to the network.

The bad news is that L10 will not make it to Natzaret. You’ll need to take the L11 (tram) from the City of Arts and Sciences to get to this barrio. But there is a silver lining. The tram will run from Natzaret to Cabanyal, eventually connecting these two coastal barrios and the entire Poblats Maritims area.

The work on L10 is expected to be completed by the end of the year, but it will take an additional couple of months for tests to be performed and all clearances to be obtained. As a result, the current estimate is that the first journeys on this line will take place in March or April 2022.

The work will most likely not end here. Recently, Generalitat President Ximo Puig announced the construction of another metro line that will connect Hospital La Fe with the Xativa station, passing through the barrio of Malilla, another neighbourhood with a poor connection to the city centre.

It’s another shot in the arm for campaigners looking to a more sustainable city in the drive to net zero carbon emissions that the planet urgently needs…
