The so-called Nine Euro Trains, which will carry you from Valencia to Madrid for a minimal fee, will begin regular service today. And it is not a marketing ploy, there are plenty of €9 tickets available on the Ouigo website.
Ouigo, Spain’s low-cost high-speed train operator, begins operating its Nine Euro Trains today (07.10.) on a line that will connect directly with Madrid from the València-Joaqun Sorolla station. The company will provide five return journeys every day at a very reasonable price.
Tickets for these high-speed trains will start at €9, and for an extra 9 euros, travellers will be able to upgrade to an XL seat, use the Wi-Fi entertainment system, and bring a large piece of baggage. Those under the age of 14 will be charged only 5 euros. Children under the age of three who journey in their parents’ arms travel for free.
Ouigo’s Nine Euro Trains will provide an additional 35,630 seats to Valencians, allowing them to travel from Valencia to Madrid at an average speed of 300 km/h in 1 hour and 50 minutes. Trains will depart from Valencia and Madrid five times each day (10 journeys), and Ouigo will gradually expand this offering by adding additional two daily departures.
“We are writing a new page in Spanish railway history,” said Hélène Valenzuela, General Director of OUIGO Spain. The opening of our second line to a new city, València, demonstrates the great impact of European railway liberalisation. The new route will also bring Valencia’s history, culture, and economics closer to the rest of Spain.
Mara Luisa Domnguez, head of Adif and Adif AV, noted that “a unique liberalisation model began just a year and a half ago, and managed to bring three operators in the same high-speed corridor, substantially lowering rates.” Liberalisation enabled us to fully use the capacity of the railway network that we deploy, run, and maintain, thereby encouraging the circulation of more trains, more services, and adding better opportunities for citizens.”
València therefore becomes the fifth city in Spain, following Madrid, Zaragoza, Tarragona, and Barcelona, to reap the benefits of railway reform in tourism, sustainable mobility, and the economy. As a result, OUIGO’s Nine Euro Trains deliver a 50% reduction in average price to Valencia, with tickets starting at €9. This overall price decrease has also attracted new sorts of visitors, such as families, young people, students, and the self-employed, making the railway accessible to all budgets.
